The Pune Okayama Friendship Garden is based on one of the major gardens of Japan i.e. " The Korakuen Garden " in Okayama City, Japan. They are known for their elegant naturalism and charm. This Japanese garden has been named after Pu. La. Deshpande. Pu. La. Deshpande was a well known Marathi writer from Maharashtra, India. He was popularly known by his initials ("Pu. La."). The Aga Khan Palace is also known as the Gandhi National Museum and is a part of the Indian freedom struggle. It served as a prison for national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi during the Quit India Movement in 1942. The palace was built in 1892 by Sultan Mohammed Shah, Aga Khan III. The palace was an act of charity by the Sultan who wanted to help the poor in the neighboring areas of Pune at a time when they were drastically hit by famine.
